After my blog the other day about downshifting I read an article in Svenska Dagbladet about the tremendous increase in debts among young people. My wife and I were just talking about that and, again, we are overcome by the tremendous irresponsibility of parents who try to buy off their guilty conscious by giving their children anything they want.
The whole consumer attitude has gone overboard to such an extend that “Kronofogden” the governmental enforcement agency collecting overdue bills from the public, proposes to offer “private economy” as a subject to both middle and high school students. Our consumer society is in need of some serious downshifting… as long as people in our social geographical network (neighborhood) consider three international holiday trips a year as an existence minimum to be able to “survive”, it is no wonder that we raise new generations of pleasure and experience addicts who will not be able to control themselves when faced with short cuts to get “it NOW” instead of having to save for it. Of course the banks have a great responsibility in this as well as they offer “good deals” on loans, or quick loans breaking people’s backs by adding yet another financial strain to them.
By the way we don’t have these problems… Until recently I was considered an alien in this nation as I did not even have my own bank account! The fact that I asked to receive my wages on my wife’s bank account was “not from this world”! However, I must confess that I have opened a bank account now. The fact is that I was forced to have a bank account on my own name to be able to pay the road tax at our inner city gates; the car was registered in my name… 🙂
In short; our socialistic, independent, moderate, right/left wing, politically Green country has its own share of welfare problems… Let’s face it: we get what we deserve, we reap what we have sown. We re-produce ourselves!
That’s the Way I see it!
